LH Area Private Lesson Objectives

It is the goal of the LH Area Band Program to provide quality music instruction for every child who wants to participate. Through weekly private instrumental music lessons, we are able to provide tutoring for students who are varied by ability levels. Some students will be enrolled in private lessons because they are in need of remedial help. Others will be pursing higher levels of learning through all city, region, and state auditions.

As the band staff works to vertically align grades 6-12, we ask that all private lesson teachers follow guidelines that will allow each child to benefit from their private instruction.

·         Each lesson needs to be completed with either a full 25, 30 or 60 minutes. Parents are paying for the full amount of time.

·         In a lesson, please plan as follows:

·         10 minutes fundamental work

·         15 minutes new information or literature

·         5 minutes review and recap

·         Please work with every child to reinforce proper posture, embouchure, and breathing techniques every lesson

·         Playing along and modeling for the students is appreciated and encouraged. Hearing and seeing can sometimes solve many issues.

·         Ask students what they are having problems with and what they need work on. Sometimes they will need help with marching band music, all region, solos, concert music, and even stand tunes. Lessons are private tutoring sessions where they can come and get help. Please do not limit what you work on with them.

·         Communicate with the directors regularly and let us know how the students are doing. Professional communication with parents and directors is vital in this relationship.

·         Allow students to pass off required assignments during lessons
