LHHS CONCERT BAND SYLLABUS

As a member of the Lake Highlands High School Concert Band, it is very important that we all understand what responsibilities are expected of us.  Outlined below are the expectations and commitments required of being in  band at LHHS.  Please feel free to email or call Mr. Lara at these places:  office—469-593-1093 or email—mark.lara@risd.org

  1. Supplies
    • 2 sharpened pencils, pencil pouch
    • Notebook with all music, warm-ups, and fingering chart
    • Valve oil, maintenance supplies, and at least 3 extra reeds for woodwinds.
    • Instrument in working condition
    • Korg TM 40 tuner/metronome combo
    • Flip folder with name clearly marked
    • Lyre    (flute, clarinet, sax, trombone)
    • Band calendar in your binder
    • Band syllabus in your binder

  1. Attendance, rehearsals, and concerts
    • Attendance is mandatory for all events.  Missing rehearsals and performances is grounds for band reassignment
    • Advance notice when possible is always the right decision.  Communicate with Mr. Lara!
    • Sectionals will be weekday mornings from 7-8am in the spring
    • The Concert Band class period is from 9:55 am – 10:50 am every Tuesday and Thursday during marching season. After, you’ll meet the same time every day.
    • Excessive tardiness is grounds for band reassignment
    • Concert attire is concert black.  Ladies, long black gowns.  Men, black pants, jacket, shoes, socks, bow tie, with a white tuxedo shirt!
    • All rehearsals are exactly that.  Rehearsals, not individuals figuring out their parts.  All parts are expected to be worked on at home and blended and balanced in class.

  1. Expectations
    • It is expected that every musician at LHHS will comply with the band handbook.
    • Talking during class will not be allowed.
    • When the director is working with other sections, all members not being worked with are expected to finger through parts or mark music.
    • No books or distractions will be allowed during rehearsal.
    • Cell phones are to be turned off and stored away from the band setup during all performances and rehearsals.  Do not leave cell phones on your music stand!
    • Be on time, prepared, and attentive.
    • Warm up and tune before band rehearsal starts.  When the conductor gives the first down beat, every musician must have already tuned themselves using a tuner.  Do not wait for the director to tune you.
    • Every member must remain eligible for the entire year.  Losing eligibility or not passing classes is grounds for band reassignment.

Members LHHS Concert Band should be constantly trying to move up to Symphonic Band. In order to achieve this every member will adhere to the highest musical standards set forth by the band staff.  It will also require extra time and practice from us all.  If you do not feel that you will be able to meet these requirements and standards, please come see Mr. Lara to discuss the issues.  Making music at the highest levels is our goal!
